Thanksgiving in the Bluegrass

Joey on the porch and snow on the roof.

Over the river and through the woods,
Elizabethtown in the rear-view,
Back to Muhlenberg County, down by the Green River
   where Paradise lay,
A picket fence of white-trunked sycamores
guarding both sides of the WK.
On to Central City, home of the Everly Brothers,
My daughter asleep in the passenger seat,
(wake up, little Susie, wake up),
Near Madisonville (“Best Town on Earth”),
To grandmother’s house we go
for wild turkey in a snow-frosted log cabin with six carloads of cousins,
Topped off with a field full of smiling saints,
Cantankerous cowboys
and a nip of Knob Creek.
